What affects the price

What affects solar panel prices?

The six biggest factors that push your solar panel quote up or down.

System size (kW)

More panels = more power. A 4kW system is standard for 3-bed homes; 6kW+ for high-usage households.

Battery storage

A 5kWh battery adds ~£3,000. It lets you use solar power at night, boosting savings by ~30%.

Roof type & pitch

South-facing 30–40° pitch is ideal. East/west splits are still viable. Flat roofs need ballasted mounts.

Panel brand

Premium panels (SunPower, REC) add 15–25% but deliver higher efficiency and 25–40 year warranties.

Scaffolding & access

Typically £600–£1,200. Complex roofs, chimneys or 3-storey buildings cost more.

Region & sun hours

Southern England gets ~1,100 sun hours/year vs ~950 in the North — affects payback, not install price.

How much do solar panels cost in 2026?

A typical 4kW solar system costs £5,200–£7,200 installed in 2026 — around 35% cheaper than in 2021. Adding a 5kWh battery brings the total to ~£9,500.

Solar installation is zero-VAT until March 2027 under the current government scheme.

Payback & savings

With current energy prices, a typical 4kW system saves £1,100/year — combining grid savings and Smart Export Guarantee payments. Payback is 6–8 years for panels only, 8–10 years with a battery.

Batteries — worth it?

A battery lets you store daytime solar for evening use, typically increasing savings by 30–40%. Pairing with a cheap overnight tariff (Octopus Go etc.) can make batteries pay back inside 7 years.

Free tip: Solar is zero-VAT until March 2027. And don’t forget the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) — you’ll earn 8–15p/kWh for energy you export back to the grid.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is it free to use?+

Yes — 100% free and no obligation. Our matched installers pay a small referral fee if you decide to go ahead with one of their quotes. You pay nothing to use Instant Home Quotes.

Will I get spam calls?+

No. Your details go only to the installers we match you with — up to three, never more. We don’t sell your data to lead brokers, and you choose which quotes to reply to.

How are the installers vetted?+

Every installer is checked for FENSA, Certass, Gas Safe, MCS or CPA accreditation as relevant, plus public liability insurance and Companies House records. We re-check quarterly.

How long do quotes take?+

Most installers reply within 24 hours. In peak seasons (spring & autumn) it can stretch to 48 hours. We’ll follow up with any that are slow.

Do you cover the whole UK?+

Yes — we match across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Rural postcodes sometimes match with fewer installers; we’ll always be upfront if that’s the case.

What if none of the quotes are right?+

Simply don’t reply. You’re under no obligation. You can also request a fresh match set if you’d like different installers — just use the form again.
